WHAT IS BIOLUMINESCENCE?
Bioluminescence in Merritt Island is caused by microscopic dinoflagellates, specifically Pyrodinium bahamense. These single-celled organisms emit a soft blue-green light when disturbed, creating an ethereal glow that follows your every paddle stroke.
From May through September, you’ll witness brilliant neon trails and glowing sea life, especially on darker nights. In cooler months October–April, comb jellies provide a softer, pulsing glow, equally magical and family-friendly.
BEST TIME TO EXPERIENCE BIOLUMINESCENCE
While bioluminescence is visible most nights, new moon phases provide the darkest skies and the brightest displays. Even during full moons, the experience remains special with the added beauty of moonlit water.
