Best Places to Paddle Board Near Orlando, FL (A Local's Guide from Otter Paddle Orlando)
If you're searching for the best places to paddle board near Orlando, Florida, you've probably come across the same recycled lists written by travel bloggers who visited for a long weekend.
We look at these waters differently.
Craig and Rachelle are the husband-and-wife team behind Otter Paddle Orlando and these aren't just tour stops for us, they're the waterways we've paddled for years and fallen completely in love with. We started this company in 2018 because we believe paddle boarding is the absolute best way to experience the "real" Florida, the natural, wild, breathtaking side that most visitors never get to see.
This isn't a generic travel list. These are the exact locations we guide tours on, week after week, season after season. From crystal-clear springs to glowing night waters, here is our personal guide to the best paddle boarding near Orlando.
1. Winter Park Chain of Lakes – Lush, Historic & Unforgettable
Launch Point: Kraft Azalea Garden, Winter Park, FL (~30 minutes from Orlando)
The Winter Park Chain of Lakes is one of Central Florida's most beautiful and iconic paddling destinations and one of our absolute favorites to guide. This spring-fed chain of lakes sits in the heart of one of Florida's most historic and charming cities, and the scenery from the water is stunning in every direction.
The Highlight — The Canal: The crown jewel of this paddle is the canal that connects the lakes. The moment you enter it, it feels like you've paddled straight into paradise. A lush, cathedral-like canopy of trees closes in overhead, the water turns glassy and still, and the rest of the world completely disappears. It is one of the most magical stretches of water we've ever paddled and our guests feel it too.
The Scenery: As you glide across the lakes, you'll pass some of Winter Park's most beautiful historic estates and stunning lakefront homes. The combination of old Florida charm, towering cypress trees, and spring-fed water makes every paddle feel like something out of a dream.
The Wildlife: Keep your eyes open, we regularly spot herons, egrets, ducks, turtles, fish, otters, and even marsh rabbits along the banks. Wildlife sightings are a highlight of every tour here.
Tour Options: We offer both daytime paddles and breathtaking sunset paddles at this location. The sunset tours are especially magical, the light that falls across the lakes and through the canopy in the evening hours is something you have to experience for yourself.
Perfect for All Levels: Whether you're a first-timer or an experienced paddler, Winter Park is a beautiful and accessible location that's easy to fall in love with.
2. Lake Conway – A Private, Local Gem in the Heart of Orlando
Launch Point: Private Residence, Belle Isle, FL (15 minutes from downtown Orlando & the Orlando International Airport (MCO))
Lake Conway is one of the most unique experiences we offer and one of our guests' most-loved. This is a private launch from our own residence, giving every tour an intimate, exclusive feel from the moment you arrive. Lake Conway is a spring-fed lake tucked inside Belle Isle, Florida, and it is the definition of a hidden local gem.
The Sandbar: One of the highlights of this paddle is the beautiful sandbar, a local favorite with a stunning white sandy bottom where you can step off your board and swim in the clear water. There's nothing quite like it, and guests absolutely love it.
The Experience: This is lake life at its absolute finest. We paddle through canals, glide past gorgeous lake homes lining the shorelines, and explore the natural pockets of this gorgeous chain. It's the kind of place that makes you forget you're just minutes from one of the busiest cities in the country.
The Wildlife: Lake Conway is full of life, birds, ducks, fish, turtles, and otters are regular sightings on every tour.
A Truly Private Experience: Because we launch from our private residence, this tour has an intimacy and exclusivity that you simply won't find anywhere else. It feels less like a tour and more like spending the morning on the water with friends who happen to know the best spots.
3. Silver Springs State Park – The Number One Spring in Florida
Launch Point: Silver Springs State Park, Silver Springs, FL (1 hour 30 minutes from Orlando)
Silver Springs is, without question, the number one spring in Florida and one of the most awe-inspiring places we have ever had the privilege of paddling. There is simply nothing else like it. Every single guest who comes out with us leaves changed by it.
The Water: The main headspring at Silver Springs pumps an average of 500 million gallons of crystal-clear water per day. The river as a whole flows at over 800 million gallons per day, making it one of the largest artesian spring systems in the entire world. The clarity is almost impossible to describe. Your board appears to hover in mid-air, the sandy bottom visible 20, 30 feet below you.
The water stays a constant 72°F year-round, making Silver Springs a beautiful paddling destination in every single season. Each time of year offers something different and extraordinary:
Fall & Winter bring manatee season (Nov. 15 to March 31) — gentle giants drifting through the crystal water right alongside your board.
Spring & Summer transform the river into a lush, turquoise paradise, the greenery explodes, the wildlife is everywhere, and the water takes on colors that don't seem real.
Silver Springs is a must-visit year-round. No matter when you come, it will take your breath away.
The Wildlife: Silver Springs has the most extraordinary wildlife of any location we paddle. Even on a day when the manatees and wild monkeys don't make an appearance, the variety and abundance of wildlife here is absolutely incredible, birds, turtles, fish, otters, alligators, and so much more surround you at every turn.
The History: Silver Springs is one of the oldest natural attractions in the state of Florida, now preserved as a State Park. Paddling here, you're floating through living history.
Good to Know: A $6 park admission fee per person is required at Silver Springs State Park.
4. Rainbow Springs – Florida's Most Beautiful River
Launch Point: KP Hole Park, Dunnellon, FL (1 hour 45 minutes from Orlando)
Rainbow River in Dunnellon is one of the most breathtaking paddling destinations in the state. Just a short road trip away, we promise it’s absolutely worth every minute. The Rainbow Springs is the fourth largest spring in Florida, and the water has to be seen to be believed.
The Water: Crystal-clear and a constant 72°F year-round, the Rainbow River offers visibility so extraordinary that guests regularly describe it as paddling over a living aquarium. Turtles, fish, and river otters drift below the surface in full view.
The Hidden Creek Oasis: Midway through the tour, we stop at a hidden creek where guests can step off their boards, wade into the cool refreshing shallows, and take a swim. With a soft sandy bottom and a lush jungle canopy overhead, it feels like a completely secret corner of Florida, because it is.
Two Tour Options: We offer a 2–2.5 hour scenic paddle and an extended 4-hour Waterfall Hike Tour that takes you all the way to the Rainbow Springs headspring and three historic man-made waterfalls inside the state park. The extended tour is one of the most special experiences we offer, a true Florida bucket list adventure.
The Float Back: The second half of both tours is a relaxing float downstream, the gentle current carries you back through this paradise while you soak in every last moment of it.
Good to Know: A $10 park admission fee per person is required at KP Hole Park.
5. Merritt Island – Dolphins, Manatees & Glowing Night Waters
Launch Point: Kiwanis Island Park, Merritt Island, FL (45 minutes from Orlando)
Merritt Island is where our tours step into an entirely different world, Florida's wild, breathtaking coastal ecosystem. Launching from Kiwanis Island Park, a peaceful haven tucked inside a protected wildlife sanctuary just minutes from Cocoa Beach, you'll paddle into some of the most wildlife-rich waters in all of Central Florida.
Dolphin & Manatee Paddle Adventure (Daytime): Glide through the calm, protected waterways of Merritt Island as wild dolphins surface alongside your board and gentle manatees drift through the water below. Lush mangrove shorelines line your route, and abundant sea life surrounds you at every turn.
Wildlife sightings here are genuinely extraordinary. Merritt Island National Wildlife Refuge is one of the most biodiverse places in the entire United States and from the water, you get to experience it up close in a way that simply isn't possible any other way.

Bioluminescence Paddle Adventure (Sunset - Nighttime): Ask us about our bioluminescence tours and watch our faces light up because we never get tired of this experience.
From May through September, the waters of Merritt Island glow neon blue with every movement. Every stroke of your paddle, every ripple, every kick of a fish creates swirling trails of electric light beneath the surface. It is one of the most surreal, magical, jaw-dropping experiences Florida has to offer and we get to share it with our guests all summer long.
We also offer special full moon paddles and when the schedule aligns, tours timed around rocket launches from nearby Kennedy Space Center. Paddling under a sky split open by a rocket launch is an experience with no words for it.
Your Questions Answered: Tips from OTTER PADDLE ORLANDO
"Is paddle boarding hard to learn?"
Not at all, with the right instruction and the right water. We've guided thousands of guests of all ages and experience levels since 2018. We take the time to make sure everyone feels safe and confident before leaving the shore. Most first-timers are standing and paddling comfortably within 15 minutes.
We also offer a paddle board kayak hybrid option at no extra charge, featuring a premium foldable seat and kayak paddle, for those who prefer a seated experience. Just select it when booking.
"What should I wear and bring?"
Wear: A swimsuit or quick-dry clothing. Water shoes or sandals you don't mind getting wet, you will be taking them off and tucking them on your paddle board. Barefoot is the best way to experience paddle boarding!
Bring: Reef-safe sunscreen, a hat, sunglasses with a strap, and a water bottle.
We provide everything else: Premium NIXY paddle boards, paddles, PFDs, dry bags and our premium photo and video package included with every single tour. Our photo and video package is unlike anything offered by other tour companies. We capture every magical moment for you, the wildlife, the glow, the smiles so you can relive the experience long after you leave the water.
"When is the best time of year to paddle board in Florida?"
Florida is endless summer, year-round paddling with just a few cooler months mixed in. Every season offers something incredible:
Winter: Manatee season. The colder the temperatures, the more manatees gather in the warm spring waters. This is the season for up-close manatee encounters that will leave you speechless.
Spring: Everything is coming back to life. Babies everywhere, lush greenery, perfect temperatures. One of our favorite times to be on the water.
Summer: The busiest and most vibrant season, every location is absolutely popping with life. Early morning tours are best for calm, peaceful conditions before the day heats up and the crowds are on the water. And of course, summer is peak bioluminescence season at Merritt Island.
Fall: Possibly the most underrated paddling season. The crowds are gone, temperatures are beautiful and warm, and the water is at its most peaceful. Fall paddling in Florida is pure paradise.
"How far are your locations from Orlando?"
Winter Park (Chain of Lakes): 30 minutes from Orlando
Lake Conway (Belle Isle): 15 minutes from downtown Orlando & Orlando International Airport (MCO)
Silver Springs State Park: 1 hour 30 minutes from Orlando
Rainbow Springs (KP Hole Park, Dunnellon): 1 hour 45 minutes from Orlando
Merritt Island (Kiwanis Island Park): 45 minutes from Orlando
"Are families welcome? Is there an age minimum?"
Absolutely, families are one of our favorite groups to take out on the water. Our tours are beginner and family friendly, and guests must be a minimum of 4 years old to participate. Children aged 4–12 ride with a parent or guardian on the same board. All participants must be comfortable in and around water. If a child 12 and under is experienced paddle boarder, they are able to be on their own paddle board.
"Do you offer private tours?"
Yes! We love hosting private tours for couples, families, birthdays, corporate groups, and bachelorette parties. Private tours are customized to your group and are a truly special experience. Contact us to learn more.
